Dr. Herrera’s training as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in family medicine and sports medicine allows him to provide a wide scope of care for his patients by using a holistic approach to health. He is a non-surgical sports medicine physician who can provide care for all ages and is well-versed in diet, exercise, manual therapy with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and non-operative orthopedic procedures to treat injuries and osteoarthritis.

Dr. Herrera grew up playing soccer and understands the frustration of injuries which eventually shortened his collegiate soccer career in Atlanta. He currently is passionate about staying fit with weightlifting and long distance running. He is a loyal Atlanta sports fan and enjoys attending live games.

Holistic Approach of Management
Dr. Herrera believes that to find successful outcomes, it is important to treat the whole person. This includes a holistic approach that seeks to understand each person’s goals and habits including diet, exercise, sleep, and mental health. This mindset was taught at his osteopathic medical school and he has taken it to heart. He has also been trained in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), which is a type of manual therapy that includes deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and gentle spinal manipulation to bring pain relief to strains and sprains, as well as general alignment issues that could cause various pains. This has also been found useful for athletes before sports events or after for recovery. See attached link for more information and how to schedule an appointment.

Caring for the youth athlete, weekend warrior, and master athlete
Dr. Herrera spends a significant amount of time with sideline coverage for football, soccer, and basketball where acute injuries often occur. He is trained to manage both medical and orthopedic concerns in acute, subacute, and chronic settings. Whether it is a serious injury or a nagging pain that will not go away, Dr. Herrera loves working to keep his patients physically active and able to maintain healthy habits. He manages tendon/ligament sprains, muscle strains, fractures, sports-related illnesses, and concussions. He is a strong advocate for physical therapy and is able to provide injection therapies for tendinopathies and osteoarthritis with corticosteroid, prolotherapy, and PRP injections, with and without ultrasound guidance.
